Selecting the Right ATV Tires for Your Machine and Use

Choosing the right ATV tires is not just about getting the right size tire to fit your machine. It's about performance, speed and even MPGs.

The right ATV tires can make all the different when you are out on the trail. The type of treads, type of rubber and durability of your tires will impact your machine's performance. So, take a moment to consider these points when selecting the right tires for your ATV.

1. Are the tires treaded properly for the road conditions you are traveling on? Do the tires have deep enough treads for thick mud, snow and ice? Good tires will have deep treads that tear through mud and grip snow and ice to some extent. They aren't a replacement for tire chains, but they will help if you get caught in a squall.

2. Are the treads too deep for my use? If you are simply traveling on light terrain, you don't need deep treaded ATV tires. They will just slow down your ATV and use more fuel.

3. Speed or handling? Speed is great on open, flat terrain, but handling is more important in thickly wooded, rutted areas. A knobby, deep tread tire is going to result in better repsonse, and faster acceleration in the woods, but it will lag on the open terrain at higher speeds.

Consider which type of riding your are going to be doing more of, and buy a tire that suits this terrain.   Don't skimp on the tires either, or price shop. That won't get you very far, and will only cost you later on. Better tires will cost a little more, but they will not wearout as fast, won't blow out and will give you more from your machine.
