Building a Winch Mount Plate

E-mail Print PDF

If you are installing a winch on a Jeep, Truck or ATV you will need to build your own winch mount plate to handle the additional stress the winch puts on your bumper. They can be store bought, but they can also be made very easily using just a few tools.

A standard winch mount plate is made form 1/4" steel plate and it is a few inches longer and wider than the base of the winch itself. The winch mount plate can be ground or cut from a sheet of 1/4" steel (which can be purchased at a hardware store, or metal supply store). Grinders can be used to cut steel.

Holes then need to be drilled to accomodate the winch mount holes and the plate should be attached to the bumper. To build your winch mount plate...

1. Buy a sheet of 1/4" steel that is about 3 feet by 2 feet. Choose a thicker steel sheet if you are going to haul very heavy items.

2. Place the winch on the sheet and trace around the base with a black marker. Then mark the mount holes by pressing the pen through them. Or dip the bolts in black paint, and slide them through the mount holes until they contact the plate. Let the paint dry. This ensures more accurate drilling.

3. Expand the outline by tracing an additional border of 1" around the shape you just traced. The mount plate should still fit within the dimensions of your bumper.

4. Cut the winch mount plate with a grinder.

5. Sand down the edges with the grinder.

6. Place the winch mount plate in a vice and drill out the mounting holes with a steel carbide bit.

7. Fit the plate to your bumper. If there is any overlap, grind it down until the sides are flush.

8. Tack weld thewinch  mount plate in place. Ensure the plate is perfectly aligned and centered on the bumper. Then complete the weld.
