Today, MPGs on used cars are a big selling factor. Car buyers looking to purchase a used car are usually doing so to cut down on the money they shell out every month for gas. You can increase MPGs just by doing simple car maintenance, and therefore keep your resale value hige. So, if you are selling a used car and want to attract more buyers, take note of these cost-saving tips to increase MPGs on any used car.

Maintenance and Service to Increase Your Used Car's MPGs

Simply changing your oil when recommended will greatly increase your used car's mpg rating. Regular oil changes prolong the life of your used car and keep your vital engine parts working more efficiently, which translates into a longer period of improved MPGs for your used car. Here's a list of services that can improve your used car's gas mileage (MPG)...

Transmission Flush
A transmission flush will help your transmission operate more evenly and prolong the life of your transmission. It won't boost your MPGs tremendously, but over time, it will ensure your transmission runs as smoothly as possible. It can also prolong the life of your engine, and reduce the amount of wear and tear on vital engine components. Remember, every time your car shifts, you lose MPGs. So, a clean and well maintained transmission will help reduce the amount of fuel lost during shifting.

Air Filter
Air filters cut down on harmful dust and debris that enters your engine, and in doing so, they also reduce the amount of mpg's your used car receives. You should never remove your air filter, because the damage that can be done to your car will far outweigh any savings your see in terms of better gas mileage, however, a new filter (or a clean filter) will produce a little better mileage because air flows more easily into your car. That means increased MPGs.

Brake Pads
Even your brake pads can affect gas consumption and lower MPGs. New pads, or higher performance pads could help to add a few MPGs to any used car. Braking reduces the overal MPG output of a used car. When you slow down, your car loses energy, and it takes more energy to get back up to speed. If your car is not able to slow down efficiently, or you are braking harder and longer on older pads, your MPG rating is going to be affected.

Put a new pair of brake pads on your used car, and buy higher performance pads for smoother braking. The sensitivity will help you manage your driving to add more MPGs to your used car. You will also find your used car experiences smoother transitions, and is more fun to drive.

Oil Changes
Changing the oil on your used car is perhaps the best thing you can do to prolong the life of your engine, experience better MPG for a longer period of time, and keep your car's engine running at a higher performance level.

Use synthetic oils because they break down slower and leave less sludge and carbon build-up in your sensitive engine parts.

Tire Rotation and Inflation
Rotating your used car's tires can help to increase your MPGs. It allows your car to take advantage of all its horsepower and gives you better control. This all translates into a more fuel-efficent used car, and higher MPGs. Keeping your tires properly inflated, also produces less drag on the asphalt. Inflate your tires to the recommended PSI on your tires, and experience better gas mileage right away.

100,000 Mile Service
Every used car needs a hundred thousand mile service, or a major service at the manufacturers recommendation. This service will tell you which parts of your used car may need to attention. Older cars experience problems with several main components like the chassis, engine, drive train and electrical systems. A 100,000 mile service will keep your car running at its optimum level.

There are several more ways to increase the MPGs on any used car. From regular servicing to removing unneeded car racks and parts. Bookmark us and come back for more.
